Noah Becker Where We Are CD Review
Soft tones and lovely vibes emanate from the music of tenor player Becker on Where We Are. The lyrical saxophonist plays with a breathy sound while the guitar rythmns of Rosenwinkel embrace his efforts. The mellow electric piano riffs of Colligan underpin the music, and Dixon and Ephross on drums and bass round out the sextet. As a group they come across as a low- keyed unit that quietly goes about it’s business of improvising off the six original tunes by Becker plus an extended selection by Fred Lacy. Becker has a bit of the style of Stan Getz in his delivery. The gentle way that the music flows from his horn matches that of Getz, and Becker further evokes the image with his occasional latin touch. The music has that easy-going appeal of what used to be called West Coast Jazz. His sensitive playing on the relaxed Lacy cut “Theme for Ernie” is particularly appealing. Rosenwinkel plays a dual role as rhythmic cohort and improvising soloist as he picks up the lead from Becker for several quietly robust rounds of guitar subtlety. Colligan also takes his turn as a soloist, spinning laid back keyboard riffs off his instrument. He switches to drums on “Snowflake Office” an up-tempo tune that stilkl maintains the ambiance of the recording despite it’s swinging demeanor. The entire session is tastefully presented with solid soloing and cohesive group interaction. Becker has an attractive product with this one. -Frank Rubolino Cadence Review of Jazz NYC, NY
