A-Trane April 2010

Thanks to Blues Boy Bill for filling in on the Trane last Friday, the March 26th show playlist with Karin Plato as my guest is coming soon - I've heard that she had a sold-out birthday celebration last week.

This Friday kicks off the CFRO Spring Membership Drive celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the station. I'll have some tasty give-aways to entice you to join up - tickets to Ingrid & Christine Jensen and French gypsy-jazzers Samarabalouf shows at Capilano Theatre this weekend and other surprises. Lots of music from them and other upcoming shows and Juno nominees galore.

Getting a bit of a late start this week getting under way a half hour late at 3 pm but the Trane is always on time whenever it starts .... N

*** - Juno Nominees

First of the Spring Membership Drive shows this year, the radio station is celebrating its 35th Anniversary and I'll be celebrating 25 years on the A-Trane this year as well. Covered a lot of bases, some Juno Nominees and upcoming shows - gave some tickets as membership incentives for the Christine and Ingrid Jensen and Samarabalouf shows courtesy of the friendly folks up at Capilano Theatre.

Also brief nods to the recently fallen, Diz Disley, Herb Ellis and Graciella.

This week is Juno Week with the awards coming up this weekend, so we'll do a bit of a review of (most of) the Jazz nominees, along with recent releases, upcoming shows and tasty favorites.

Recently discovered that there is an online membership page for joining and donating to CFRO (listener-sponsored community radio!), go to http://www.canadahelps.org/CharityPr...harityID=16772 and sign up, be sure to fess up that it's for the A-Trane and I'll be happy to play a dedication. (And it's tax deductible - the donation not the dedication...)

Sign up and out ... N

*** - Juno Nominees
*** - Juno Winners

Except for a short side-trip to Chicago, just about all Canadian show this week, celebrating the Jazz side of the Juno Awards. Strong collection of nominees this year, (I would have had a hard time figuring out who to vote for!) and the winners all certainly deserving.

By the way, there's a new audio archive at coop radio which will allow you to either listen to archived shows or download mp3s of the show to listen to at your leisure. Still a little primitive (the shows don't start and stop at the right time yet and the hour long clips overlap a little) but definitely a step in the right direction. The last couple of weeks are up now at: http://beta.coopradio.org/station/archives/54 so if you want to check out the Juno nominees (and the winners!).

The show was bookended with local gigs from artists who would not be out of place in an awards list: Tony Foster at O'Doul's and Chris Gestrin at the Cellar both last weekend.

This week continuing with the Spring Membership Drive, the station is celebrating its 35th Anniversary (!) and the A-Trane has been on the air for over 25 of those years(!!!) and we're doing a 1975-themed show. (If you have any 35-year old requests you've been wanting to get on the air, now's the time to drop me a line!)

Also this week, some previews of upcoming concerts. I'll have some choice give-aways including tickets and other swag for the upcoming Pat Metheny Orchestrion concert (see http://vancouverjazz.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3502) and several other surprises so don't miss it.

This week's A-Trane

I'll be featuring some music from Michael Blake and Hellbent in advance of their show on Sunday at Capilano Theatre (see http://www.capilanou.ca/news-events/...nces/jazz.html), and thanks to the good folks up there I'll have a pair of tickets to give away early in tomorrow's A-Trane show. For some background on Michael Blake you can see an interview that I did with him the last time he played Capilano (it was a college then!) with his BC Amor de Cosmos band (http://vancouverjazz.com/inview/blake.shtml). I've heard through the grapevine that he's also a guest on this week's Hot Air (http://www.cbc.ca/hotair/) on CBC Radio One so no excuses.

I'll also be playing some music from Pat Metheny's Orchestrion project which is at the Centre on Saturday (http://vancouverjazz.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3502) - sorry I gave away all the swag for that show last week!

I'll be leaving slightly early during this week's show to catch a ferry but I'll be rebroadcasting my interview with Charlie Haden from last fall which (not surprisingly) also has some Pat Metheny content.

The full line-up for this year's TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival has just been announced (see http://www.coastaljazz.ca/) - tickets on sale today! An extensive preview of this year's fest favorites will have to wait til next week's show.

Get out and check out some live music (the Talking Pictures Invitational http://vancouverjazz.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3585 and Kate Hammett-Vaughan's Birthday Celebration*** http://katehv.com/performances.html are also on this weekend!), there's lots to choose from.

N.

***Happy Birthday Kate!
