A-Trane November 2009

Jumping into November with the A-Trane tomorrow - expecting a visit from Ron Samworth and/or Wayne Horvitz and/or Robin Holcomb in the latter part of the show in advance of the Talking Pictures evening at the Cultch on Saturday, see http://www.vancouverjazz.com/forums/...2837#post12837 for details.

Besides which we'll feature some tunes from Mike Rud, Kate Hammett-Vaughan, Van Django, Yves Leveillé, Dee Daniels/Sacred Music of Duke Ellington and more as well as lots of new releases!

Also some music from the late trumpeter Stacy Rowles who tragically passed away last weekend.

N.

(PS. requests always welcome!)

Some looks forward, some looks back; had a brief visit from Wayne Horvitz, Robin Holcomb and Ron Samworth in advance of the Talking Pictures concert on Saturday at the newly-reopened Vancouver East Cultural Centre. All too brief a visit, but Wayne's promised a longer session for the next time he comes to town. The concert featured some new pieces, sparkling songs, improvisations and revisits to crazy larks. Aural paintings hanging in the air, a wonderful evening ...

A nod to Stacy Rowles' passing with some trumpet and flugelhorn offerings and her poignant vocal on Looking Back. Combined a nod to the late great guitarist Freddie Robinson with a preview of John Mayall's show in a set surrounded by the blues. Other concert previews for Kate Hammett-Vaughan, Mike Rud, and Yves Léveillé - all three at the Cellar.

New and recent releases from the Charles Tolliver Big Band (dedicated to penguins), Sharel Cassity (with a Tolliver composition) and Tony Wilson.

Trained in and out with Wayne Horvitz's crib ...

Catching up before filling in ...

A bit of an Ellington subtheme this week (but just a bit) in advance of the Concert of Sacred Music featuring the Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra & Co (see http://vancouverjazz.com/2009/11/duk...red-music.html) for details. But other upcoming shows: NY-based saxophonist Joel Frahm coming to the Cellar with Toronto drummer Ernesto Cervini (for their new release), Coat Cooke at Presentation House (the series continues...). Van Django, Mike Rud, Ollie Gannon all three at the Cellar which let me finally fill a long-standing request for Mary Osborne and some historical riffs from Eddie Durham in 1938 (the first amplified guitarist!).

A brief look back at some music from the late Dick Katz. A bunch of new and recent releases: a terrific new Ben Sidran disc on the heels of last year's organ quartet extravanganza, it really is Dylan different, and so is Peggy Lee - in advance of her show upcoming in December. New one from Vivian Houle doing a series of duets and a new Tony Wilson sextet disc both on Drip Audio. And JJ & Kai put me in the mood for some trombones with three recent winners from Andy Martin, Steve Davis, and Victoria-based Nick LaRiviere (upcoming cd release concert in January at the Cellar).

The show tomorrow is a repeat (but I don't know which one): station maintenance - say no more. Back next week with another heady mix, I'll be featuring the new Mississippi Sheiks tribute disc produced by Steve Dawson for Black Hen and some other tasty morsels ... N

On the A-Trane tomorrow ...

Last week turned out to be a repeat of the October 23rd show (see http://vancouverjazz.com/forums/show...2940#post12940 for the playlist) with the interview with Jan Jarzcyk.

Tomorrow, as advertised, I'll be featuring some great music from The Mississippi Sheiks and the new tribute recording Things About Comin' My Way produced by Steve Dawson on the Black Hen label.

Also dropping by at about 4:30 for the last hour of the show will be Coat Cooke and Stefan Smulovitz to talk about the Mad Scientist Machine, goings on with Orkestra Futura and the Hear It NOW 2009: L.E.D by the Light performance on Saturday (see http://vancouverjazz.com/2009/11/hea...-by-light.html).

Also some music from Tony Foster, Ben Sidran, Joe Magnarelli, Gary Smulyan, Cory Weeds and other new releases and tasty tidbits, tune in at 2:30 and don't miss a drop ...

It's Hard to Stop A-Trane ... N

Covered a lot of territory this week, started off with a wonderful version of the theme from Vancouver pianist Tony Foster's new disc (see http://www.tonyfostermusic.com/) and with the Mississippi Sheiks around the corner, launched into a few views of the blues with Sidney Bechet. Some early sightings of Gary Smulyan and Joe Magnarelli before their Cross-Border Jazz visit to the Cellar in December, and a dialogue about the rain with Tony Foster.

The new Mississippi Sheiks tribute disc produced by Steve Dawson for Black Hen covers a lot of incredible territory and some spine-tingling chills sampled with some back-to-back comparisons with the originals. (See http://www.blackhenmusic.com/album/t...t-comin-my-way) Stayed with Black Hen for Chris Tarry's visit to the Cellar on the 27th/28th.

Some other recent releases and acquisitions: a couple of fine releases on Standard Form (http://www.standardform.org/) - a new label to watch out of Toronto with some very creative acoustic chamber jazz; this year's collaboration of Ethiopiques star pianist Mulatu Astatke with UK afro-beat jazzers the Heliocentrics; another of Ben Sidran's takes on Dylan and James Carter taking a walk on Broadway with John Medeski and crew.

Coat Cooke dropped by in the last hour to chat about goings-on with the Now Orchestra/Orkestra Futura and their performance at the Cultch on November 28th featuring Stefan Smulovitz's Mad Scientist Machine as L.E.D. by the Light (see http://vancouverjazz.com/2009/11/hea...-by-light.html) and played the works from the Now Orchestra's release from this year.
