Had a wide-ranging half-hour interview with Charlie Haden on the A-Trane last Friday in advance of his upcoming visit to the Vancouver International Film Festival. We chatted about how the documentary came about, as a boy doing a radio show out of his family's living room every morning before school, early days with Ornette, coming to New York, playing with John Coltrane, his collaborations with Alice Coltrane, the Liberation Music Orchestra, his educational activities, championing of young musicians and a wide variety of other topics.

The conversation wove around and in parallel with the recent documentary Charlie Haden: Rambling Boy which will be featured at this year's Vancouver International Film Festival
(see http://www.viff.org/tixSYS/2009/xslg...entNumber=2657 and http://charliehadenfilm.com/home.html for more details)

again with screenings at:
Thu, Oct 8th 11:00am
Thu, Oct 15th 6:30pm (Charlie Haden in attendance)
Fri, Oct 16th 1:15pm (Charlie Haden in attendance)

The film is a truly remarkable musical journey by a truly remarkable musician and I'd recommend it highly.

Musically, we touched on several of Haden's collaborations with friends and family and the Rambling Boy release; the film starts with a great Fox Chase duet with harmonica player Buddy Greene which inexplicably didn't make the cd (in spite of a specific thank you for the song in the liner notes)! And started of course, with one of Haden's recordings with John Coltrane & Don Cherry.

Some other nods: Pannonica for another 2009 VIFF film The Jazz Baroness about The Baroness Pannonica Rothschild de Koenigswarter; Jan Jarczyk for the upcoming Seifert tribute at Norman Rothstein on the 24th, David Hazeltine for the upcoming Cross-Border Jazz event coming up at the Cellar Oct 16/17, Campbell Ryga at the Cellar last weekend, Chris Davis at Jazz Vespers last weekend and Jared Burrows Quartet opening the Presentation House fall Series Wednesday Oct 7th.

Even managed to get in a Petra Haden Who tune in advance of Roger Daltry at the Commodore next Saturday!

This Friday October 9th, my guest will be Fiona Black from Capilano University Performing Arts Theatre - we'll be chatting about this year's Jazz Series (see http://www.capilanou.ca/news-events/...nces/jazz.html) including the upcoming shows featuring guitarist John Abercrombie on October 30th and percussionist Cyro Baptista on November 1st. And the usual looks ahead and behind.

You thought that I would need a crystal ball to see right through the haze ... N

-----------------

Just managed to arrange another interview for tomorrow's A-Trane, the sound installation artist (for lack of a better term) Trimpin will be my guest at about 4:30 PM. He is visiting Vancouver from his home in Seattle in conjunction with the documentary about him called Trimpin: The Sound of Invention which is playing at this year's Film Festival (see http://www.viff.org/tixSYS/2009/xslg...entNumber=3691 for details). One of his installations will also be featured at the Film Centre for the film screenings this weekend. One of his player/toy piano installations was previously featured at the Jazz Festival a few years back at Iron Works; he's also well-known for the Experience Music installation in Seattle called If VI Was IX which looks like a guitar tornado! Should be fun.

Also upcoming, I'll be interviewing musician Uri Caine on the October 23rd A-Trane in advance of his performance at the upcoming New Music Festival entitled Copyright/Copyleft (see http://www.newmusic.org/copyleft.htm) which is happening at the Scotiabank Dance Centre between October 21st and 24th inclusive. Looks like a fabulous series which will also feature performances from John Oswald/Plunderphonics, Chris Cutler, Mark Hosler (from Negativland) and David Shea. More details later ... N

Jan Jarsczyk and more on the A-Trane

Special extended edition of the A-Trane tomorrow afternoon (oops, today now!), we'll be running from 2:30 to 6:30 with lots of great stuff.

I'll be interviewing Polish (but Montreal-based) pianist Jan Jarsczyk on the A-Trane tomorrow afternoon at 3pm. He will be visiting Vancouver next Saturday Oct 24th as part of the International Polish Jazz Group tribute to violinist Zbigniew Seifert. (See http://vancouverjazz.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3369 for more details.)

Also some music from David Hazeltine & Ian Hendrickson-Smith in advance of their Cross-Border Jazz collaboration this weekend at the Cellar. Music as well from artists coming as part of the New Music Festival entitled Copyright/Copyleft (see http://www.newmusic.org/copyleft.htm) which is happening at the Scotiabank Dance Centre between October 21st and 24th inclusive. And music from artists featured in the Dangerous Improv: Music Meets Dance Festival at the Roundhouse between October 26th and 28th inclusive (see http://vancouverjazz.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3390 for details). And the usual mix of great tunes and fun (and requests!)....

A final reminder that there is one last Film Festival screening of the Charlie Haden film Rambling Boy tomorrow afternoon 1:15 pm at the Vancity Theatre with Charlie Haden in attendance. (See http://www.viff.org/tixSYS/2009/xslg...entNumber=2657).

Great film Man!

Also some Winston Mankunku ...

I'll also be playing some music from the late South African saxophonist Winston Mankunku who passed away this week; I'm planning a longer retrospective with his friend and musical colleague Themba Tana early in November.

And music from John Abercrombie and Cyro Baptista who are playing at the end of the month at Capilano Theatre

Had an extended show til 6:30 filling in for Blues Boy Bill who took his blues on the road for this week - still ran out of time!

Had a great chat with Jan Jarczyk on the phone from Montreal in advance of his visiting Vancouver next Saturday Oct 24th as part of the International Polish Jazz Group tribute to violinist Zbigniew Seifert. (See http://vancouverjazz.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3369 for more details.). We covered everything from the quartet's individual histories with the virtuoso violinist Seifert and Seifert's own collaborations with folks like McCoy Tyner, John Scofield, and Oregon to Polish Jazz and the Jazz Jamboree to Tomasz Stanko and Kristof Komeda and the Montreal scene. Covered quite a bit of ground.

Still had Charlie Haden in mind from attending the screening at the film festival the evening before. In the question period after the film, Charlie mentioned two of his collaborations/duets with Turiya Alice Coltrane so playing them on the show was natural. After having listened to a lot of Charlie's music lately, I was only surprised a little to find elements of Wayfaring Stranger in the piece he wrote to feature Alice's harp-playing. It really is all connected.

Featured some music from David Hazeltine and Ian Hendrickson-Smith in advance of the Cross-Border Jazz sessions at the Cellar Oct 9/10th. And some John Abercrombie and Cyro Baptista for their upcoming shows at Capilano Theatre on October 30th and November 1st respectively.

A short piece by the late South African saxophonist Winston Mankunku, I'm planning a longer retrospective in November with Winston's old friend and associate Themba Tana, keep an ear open for that. But the South African theme was a good segue to music in advance of a musical tribute to Miriam Makeba featuring Jane Mortifee and the Universal Gospel Choir on October 24th at the Kay Meek Centre (see http://www.educationwithoutborders.c...a-oct24-09.gif) in support of the work of Education without Borders for schools in South Africa (http://www.educationwithoutborders.ca/).

Also thought I'd have some fun in advance of the Copyleft Festival being presented Oct 21st through the 24th (http://www.newmusic.org/copyleft.htm) with some of my favorite musical appropriations from John Oswald/Plunderphonics and Negativland (both represented at the festival) and the Justified Ancients of Mumu, Steinski and Mass Media's recreation of the Kennedy assassination and (to put it back in the jazz domain) US3 and Peewee Marquette (half a ...).

This Friday October 23rd, pianist and musical re-inventor Uri Caine (who will be performing at the Copyleft Festival on October 24th) will be joining me for a chat around 3pm and later at 4:45 choreographer Alvin Tolentino and ION ZOO vocalist Carol Sawyer will be dropping in to talk about the DANGEROUS IMPROV: MUSIC MEETS DANCE series at the Roundhouse on from Monday October 26th through Wednesday October 28th (see http://vancouverjazz.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3390).

This Friday is also part of this year's CFRO membership drive, I'll have lots of goodies to encourage you to keep up your membership to Coop Radio including tickets to the Zbigniew Seifert Tribute at the Norman Rothstein Theatre on October 24th, John Abercrombie at Capilano Theatre on October 30th and Cyro Baptista at Capilano Theatre on November 1st.

Phew!!!

More details just arrived ...

We'll be continuing this year's CFRO membership drive on this Friday's A-Trane show. The Seifert and Abercrombie tickets are gone but I still have a pair of tickets for Cyro Baptista at Capilano Theatre on November 1st and a healthy selection of CDs to give away as incentives for listeners who would like to sign up as new members or renew their membership.

I'll also make available your selection of any of the 'private' recordings which I've played on the show in the past (audience favorites seem to include 2 CDs of John Abercrombie/Miroslav Vitous duets, John Coltrane with Stan Getz, 2 CDs of Lambert Hendricks & Ross live in Germany, CDs of unreleased Miles Davis/John Coltrane in Europe, live Mingus at Ronnie Scotts etc.). If you have anything you're trying to hunt down or favourite artists, give me a try - the vaults are deep ...

If you'd like to get ahead of the curve for any of the above incentives (tix or CDs), to sign up as a member, send me a private message (here: http://www.vancouverjazz.com/forums/...do=newpm&u=316) and I'll be happy to sign you up and arrange for you to get your goodies.

I'd like to put out a special call to those artists who I've interviewed or whose music I've played or whose concerts I've promoted in the last year - you know who you are!

.. thanks, N.

Unfortunately due to a logistical mixup my planned interview with Uri Caine was cancelled - postponed I hope, he was quite apologetic and we'll have a chat next time round. His concert closing out the New Music Society's Copyleft Series (see a review of another concert in the series: http://vancouverjazz.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3404) was sublime with the surprise addition of Ralph Alessi on trumpet touching on many things - deft improv but also appropriately appropriating some Mozart and some Mahler courtesy of The Boy's Magic Horn!

Also featured some music from Zbigniew Seifert and Jan Jarczyk in advance of The Polish International Group's fabulously burning concert at the Norman Rothstein Theatre, kudos to Andrew Major for pulling off a great show and good luck to him for future endeavours of the fledgling Polish Jazz Society.

Had a visit in the studio from bassist Clyde Reed (substituting for an ailing Carole Sawyer) and dancer Alvin Tolentino in advance of the Dangerous Improv series at the Roundhouse featuring music from some of the participants Jared Burrows, Bruce Freedman, and Ion Zoo (from their brand new release).

Music from upcoming (at that time) concerts from John Abercrombie and Cyro Baptista at Capilano Theatre, and sampler/appropriationist David Shea (with Cyro!) at Copyleft.

And a wonderful new release from the Brother Thelonious Quintet featuring alumni of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Studies Program. Ugly Beauty with Carmen McRae's lyric was Gretchen Parlato's encore when she was here with her quartet at Capilano Theatre in September - on the recording, she's featured with Helen Sung on piano and Ambrose Akinmusire on trumpet - see http://www.northcoastbrewing.com/thelonious-cd.htm for more details. Which led nicely into Uri Caine's duet with Don Byron.

Still we dream ....
