We come from faraway places to the golden city, oh lord make us one ...

Today's Trane

Thought I'd feature some saxophone trios today, Joe Daley at Newport (with Hal Russell), Brian Barley (with Claude Ranger), Sonny Rollins (with Elvin Jones), and of course, John Coltrane (with Art Taylor) - maybe even some Phil Dwyer!

Lots of upcoming shows, Joey D., Ernie Watts, Ted Warren, Jon Hassell, October Trio with Brad Turner, Fernanda Cunha, Joe Locke, Norma Winstone, Jane Bunnett ...

The sweet return of Freddie Hubbard, new releases and more ... wow!

I've found myself listening to a number of saxophone trios in the last little while and thought I'd kick off the show with a few starting (of course) with some from Coltrane and Rollins [sticklers will note that Straight Street is not a trio but the cd player doesn't always play what I want and when I heard Sahib Shihab's baritone I couldn't bear to take it off].

Rediscovered a long-out-of-print classic as a legal download in the Joe Daley at Newport (grab it yourself at http://www.archive.org/details/Joe-D...ive-Newport-63). The most recent Coda magazine has a cover article on Claude Ranger and mentioned the Brian Barley trio prompting me to haul that one out too. And the October Trio CD release is coming up so they fit in along with Tony Malaby's trio, both recent releases on Songlines.

Besides another track celebrating Freddie Hubbard from the under-rated Sweet Return, most of the remainder was upcoming shows in Vancouver: Joey DeFrancesco (last weekend), Joe Locke, Ernie Watts, Fernanda Cunha, Dhafer Youssef, Norma Winstone, James Cotton, Ted Warren and the aforementioned October Trio with Brad Turner.

Finished up the show with another sweet return to Sheila Jordan's wonderful recent release on Justin Time and a serendipitous pair of Bobby Timmins tunes.

This week Josh Cole (bassist in the October Trio) will come down to chat about the trio and the upcoming CD release gig at the Western Front next Friday January 23rd and Tony Reif will drop in to survey a number of recent releases on Songlines. More previews (Jodi Proznick, new Bill Frisell, new Jon Hassell, the Necks etc) and new releases (Seamus Blake, Tony Monaco, SFJC, Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, Ross Taggart etc) to come.

Can I have that big elephant over dere?

As promised, Josh Cole bassist and principal composer for the October Trio came down to chat about the new release with Brad Turner on Songlines and the associated CD release event at the Western Front on Friday January 23rd at 7:30 pm - $10 at the door, $20 includes the CD! Had an interesting chat covering the background of the group and the recording, antecedents for both the tenor trio format and the tenor/trumpet front line format, the use of harmonic concepts in those formats, experiences at the Banff school, inspirations for composition and the importance of writing relevant music (Dave Douglas: "If you write a composition about a cheeseburger, don't expect people to connect with it!"). Had a fun chat and if you can't make it to the concert, you can catch the live webcast on Simon Fisk's web tv site http://www.plungerecords.com/?news (follow the links - requires the latest flash player from Adobe).

Tony Reif, the 'sole proprietor' of Songlines Recordings (see http://songlines.com/) also came by for a bit of a survey of recent and upcoming releases. Songlines has specialized in audiophile releases (many hybrid-SACDs) which cover a broad spectrum and mix of jazz, improvised, contemporary classical, world, ambient/electroacoustic/electronica and other unclassifiable sounds: stuff Tony likes - I can relate ...

Besides the October Trio + Brad Turner, we heard Ryan Blotnick (young guitarist from the east coast who has worked with Michael Blake), guitarist Brad Shepik (from his suite addressing global issues and musical styles), the second release from Wayne Horvitz's Gravitas Quartet (featuring Peggy Lee on cello), Sean Noonan (Tony refered to it as punk jazz but I thought it had more prog rock - think dense King Crimson - elements, features Marc Ribot and Jamaladeen Tacuma), Poolplayers (improvised but prepared super silent electronically processed in real time), and tenor player Tony Malaby's new trio with cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm and percussionista John Hollenbeck. We got about half-way through the stack so we'll have to schedule a return visit.

With all that, still managed to squeeze in some previews, Jodi Proznick was at the Cellar last weekend, and Ross Taggart will be having his cd release there at the end of the month. Played an advance copy of Jon Hassell's new ECM release in anticipation of his concert at the Chan in mid February. Two recent releases are dedicated to the late Doug Riley both recorded in Toronto and both featuring guitarist Ted Quinlan: drummer Ted Warren who brings his Warren Commission to the Cellar at the beginning of February and an organ trio led by Tony Monaco with a great workout on the Don Patterson classic.

One more from Bill Frisell's latest on Nonesuch (coming in a duet with Russell Malone in March), and a nod ahead to inauguration day.

It's been a long time, but I know
A change is gonna come, oh yes it will

Mainly upcoming shows and new releases this week, October Trio + Brad Turner had their CD release event on Friday, managed to catch part of the webcast on Plunge TV, had a bit of difficulty with dropouts but overall a fine performance. Joe Locke was at the Cellar on the weekend with Ugetsu, managed to make it down on Saturday - the theme was Mode for Joes with different Joes in the two sets. Locke in a quartet for the first doing mainly standards and a couple of his own compositions, joined in the second set by the horn section for a recreation of the Joe Henderson album Mode for Joe (represented here by Ugetsu's recording of Caribbean Fire Dance. This was Joe Locke's first time in Vancouver but he was obviously having a blast and here's hoping that he returns with Force of Four soon. Special mention to Brad Turner again - Cory was planning to broadcast part of the concert on his CFRO show Chasing The Train, I'll post details when I can get them.

The week President Obama signed an order to close Guantanamo seemed like a good time to feature Jane Bunnett's Guantanamo Blues in advance of her show in February. Note that Francisco Mela will be performing with her ensemble. Ted Warren coming to the Cellar next weekend.

A choice selection from the late David Fathead Newman and a few new releases. The Orbert Davis and the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic take the path that third stream might have gone if the AACM had picked up that banner. Which they do here in a fine rearrangement of a couple of Armstrong classics contrasted with the 1928 originals. Taking a separate but parallel path is the Wave Mechanics Union performance of the Led Zeppelin tune that their CD title is derived from.

Bassist/composer Jon Burr featured on two new releases, in the Mark O'Connor trio and in his own ensemble (replete with many fine guests) doing new songs. I wasn't previously familiar with Ty Stephens but he's definitely a vocalist worth keeping an ear on.

Cory's filling in for me next week but I'll be back in full force the week after, the jazz calendar gets very busy starting in February.
