RIP - Mario Rivera
You've probably never heard of him, unless it was with Dizzy's United Nations Orchestra, but the greatest multi-woodwind player (all the saxes and flute) in Afro-Cuban Jazz has passed away of cancer. Mario Rivera played with just about everybody in a career that lasted several decades. He was known for his ability to play both "tÃ*pica" (traditional) and Cubop at the highest level. When I first heard him playing Afro-Bop baritone in the early 80's... well, that was all it took to get this jazzer hooked on Latin Music. Thank you, "El Commandante". I know you're playing your ass off, wherever you are.
Allan PS: Here are a couple of clips of Mario in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhtJ6YLyy90 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DuteyJviBE |
