Bop

I was reading the liner notes for a Carl Fontana Album the other day (The Great Fontana) and they said that he was the greatest Bop Trombonists ever. I had personally always considered Carl more of a swing player and this got me to thinking, when you talk as someone as a Bop/Swing/Hard Bop/Post Bop/etc player, how do you define those? Repetoire has something to do with it, but what other factors go into defining your style?
