Big bag 'o stuff for the this edition of the A-Trane, upcoming gigs, and cool favorites - even tix to give away for Alan Matheson's Birth of the Cool and Beyond gig at Cap Jazz. Even the groundhog said it's gonna be cool!

What could be cooler than starting with Mr. Ho's Orchestrica taking the theme? Alan Matheson's gig inspired more coolness - live Miles Nonet from Birdland Sept '48, with Gil Evans at Carnegie Hall May '61 and with Quincy Jones at Montreaux in the early 90s, pre-birth with Gil Evans/Claude Thornhill, Shorty Rogers and Alan's own Nonet.

New and recent releases include a feature for Amy Cervini's new Digging Me Digging You hot off the presses (nominally a Blossom Dearie tribute but it's got Amy's personal stamp all over it - she's coming to the Cellar in April), Vince Mendoza, Dixie's Death Pool, Wadada Leo Smith, Charlie Haden and Hank Jones, and Bruce Babad. (Did you notice the Birdland subtheme?)

Upcoming gigs besides Matheson's (at that time anyway) Bill Coon, Peter Bernstein, Reg Schwager (with Diana Panton), Sultans of String, Andrea Superstein, Steve Kaldestad, Benny Green and Zapato Negro. (See the Jazz Calendar - http://vancouverjazz.com/webcalendar/ - for details.)

And don't forget the Sister Rosetta Tharpe documentary at the Vancity Theatre on Thursday Feb 9th (http://vancouverjazz.com/2012/02/the...ta-tharpe.html), see you there ... N

PS. Awards rundown on next week's A-Trane, Grammy and Juno Jazz Award Nominees - Winners All! ... N

*** - 2012 Grammy Nominee
### - 2012 Grammy Winner
%%% - 2012 Juno Nominee

Jazz Award Roundup excitement! With the Grammy Awards that weekend and the Juno Award contenders announced earlier that week, this A-Trane had a focus on nominees - and (with perfect 20/20 hindsight) a few of the winners!

Last year's Grammy Winner James Moody took in the theme, and launched into a couple of recordings Coltrane did with Rudy Van Gelder (who received a special Trustee's Award at the Grammies this year) - Blue Train and A Love Supreme!

Esperanza Spalding kicked off the festivities with her duet performance with Bobby McFerrin from last year's Grammies and a couple of nominated releases that she played on this year: Teri-Lynn Carrington's Mosaic Project (winner) and Joe Lovano's Bird Songs. Then Grammy nominees galore: Randy Brecker, Christian McBride (winner!), Roseanna Vitro, Tierney Sutton, Fred Hersch, Monty Alexander, Sonny Rollins (with a visit from Ornette), Kurt Elling, and the trio of Donald Harrison/Ron Carter/Billy Cobham. (Found time for erstwhile Latin Jazz Grammy protester Bobby Sanabria as well.)

Juno nominees weren't neglected with L'Orkestre Des Pas Perdus, Kirk McDonald, Fern Lindzon, Francois Bourassa, and Jane Bunnett/Hilario Duran.

Upcoming events (at that time) from Jennifer Scott (with a new release), Monik Nordine & Departure, Sheila Jordan and a great recent release from Allen Lowe (that we'll definitely be revisiting again). Even got off a dedication to My Funny Ballantyne - that just about covers it! ... N

### - 2012 Grammy Winner

Tony Wilson was my guest on this week's A-Trane. Tony is known in the Vancouver musical community as an outstanding musician, composer and arranger but Tony has known some dark days. He's captured a fascinating (and disturbing) portrait of a day in the life of a musician living on the streets of the Downtown East Side in his new novella A Day's Life which was released in a special concert with Tony's sextet that evening at Ironworks.

We covered a lot of territory from Tony's history and musical background, his musical collaborations, to how closely the events and experiences in the book correspond to his own life, and the journeys taken from there to here. A gripping read - although the locations aren't specifically named, for anyone remotely familiar with the area around Main and Hastings, it's not hard to visualize exactly where the (unnamed) musician wanders throughout the day. Definitely a window into a world that (thankfully) most of us will never know.

The launch concert of music written specifically to accompany the book that evening at Ironworks was definitely a family affair - one of Tony's daughters Rhea Monpetit edited the book and the other Zoe Montpetit took the photographs in the book which were projected on a screen during the concert. But musical family was included too - not only the sextet which featured long-time collaborators Peggy Lee, JP Carter, Jesse Zubot, Russell Sholberg, and Skye Brooks but also many of Tony's musical compatriots and admirers in the Vancouver creative music community were milling about in the sold-out crowd.

The book itself was published in a limited edition of 100 copies so it may be difficult to get hold of one (if you don't already have one) but at least the music was recorded by the CBC for future broadcast on The Signal hosted by Laurie Brown. And there is another performance planned for the sextet in Vancouver at the end of March - check back at http://vancouverjazz.com/webcalendar/ for details.

In the interim, if you'd like to hear the interview, it's available for streaming or download at http://www.coopradio.org/station/archives/54 for Feb 17th at 15:00 and 16:00.

For the rest of the show, Matt Shipp took the theme (from the Art of the Improviser) then Trane and Michael Bisio took a side trip to Alabama and Matt flew us to the moon one more time. Corea, Clark and White were double Grammy winners and Dan Berglund's Tonbruket was a Swedish Grammy winner - more winners to be featured in coming weeks.

Upcoming gig features for Morgan Childs, Michael Blake, Peter Bernstein, Tania Gill and Lina Allemano, George Benson (jazz fest tickets now on sale!), and Benny Green. Even managed to squeeze in a new release from the October Trio, tata for now ... N
