Jimi Hendrix on the A-Trane!
No not back from the dead but just noticing that this week is the 40th anniversary of the death ofJimi Hendrix (I remember it well, I was bummed out for a long time) and on the radio show this week, I thought I would do bit of a tribute to Jimi and his jazz descendants - meaning people who have covered his music or maybe explicitly influenced by him or whatever - it's a
pretty loose definition in my mind and a good excuse to construct a fun show. I have a few things in mind: Lots of the Gil Evans stuff, the RCA studio, Gramavision/Sweet Basil and lots of other live sessions; Robert Dick's excellent tribute recording; Paul Plimley/Lisle Ellis do a great Third Stone from the Sun; The Tiptons getting All Manic; World Sax Quartet getting Experienced; several Voodoo Chile covers including Stevie Ray Vaughan; and of course some Jimi etc.... Also noticed that Chris Gestrin et al are doing a Larry Young Tribute at the Cellar this weekend and of course, Larry Young played with Hendrix (and was indebted to Coltrane)! -- Any other suggestions? Favorites? Here's a link to get your mind focused: http://jazztimes.com/articles/20150-...dern-jazz-axis Now all I need to do is find a Hendrix-inspired version of Take the A Train and I'll be all set ... N. P.S. I saw this show in Toronto May 1969, he got busted at the airport but they still let him do the show: ![]()

Hendrix
The vocalist Cynthia Jones has a good version of "Up From The Skies" on her album "Cynthia Jones & The West Coast Nightlights" on Sweet Flame Records.

If 6 were 9 to the universe ....
Quote:
As I mentioned Larry Young will also be a sub-feature on the show - I've dug up some of the un-edited recordings that appeared on Nine to the Universe which feature a jam between Jimi and Larry Young while he was working on John McLaughlin's Devotion recording. Lots of fun! ... N
