Starting on New Year's Day with a timely show, started with the tolling bells of a Duke ghost band rendition of Auld Lang Syne into the band in its heyday with the regular theme: out with the new, in with the old!

It all happened round midnight with some 50 year-old Olatunji dreaming of a new dawn ... filled the show out with some timely tunes (well Bud, which is it? Time Flies or Time Waits?); drummers are most concerned with time and (not surprisingly) they're well-represented here. Blakey even snuck in a look at the blue moon!

A Christmas Day fire apparently damaged a Vancouver jazz landmark, the original Cellar nightclub which operated in the late 50s/early 60s and hosted a who's who of talent over the years. (See http://www.jazzstreetvancouver.ca/venues/1 for more details, unfortunately Gregg Simpson's site which hosts a very nice history of the Cellar with a great photo-gallery appears to be off-line at the moment.) As a tribute to the original Cellar, I dug up a few recordings associated with the old Cellar - the legendary Harold Land/Elmo Hope/Scott LaFaro recording which was surreptitiously recorded at the Cellar, Kenneth Patchen with the Al Neil Quartet which had its genesis at the Cellar although it was recorded at the CBC, and the Mongomery Brothers which was recorded afterhours at the Cellar. (Thanks to Gavin Walker for pointing out that last one, I didn't know about the Cellar or Vancouver association.)

[More recent reports indicate that the building which housed the Cellar may have missed the worst of the fire.]

Finished up with a look ahead to the Cellar appearance of Joey DeFrancesco for the recording session with Cory Weeds on Jan 8/9/10 and the beat goes on....

===

Well into the year and back to business as usual, started with a greasy theme, a Miles spread of 32 years (1956 to 1988) and then got down to it - upcoming shows covered this week include:

* Joey DeFrancesco and Cory Weeds with Chris Davis and Byron Landham in a recording session at the Cellar (done now);
* Jerry Weldon and former-Vancouverite Rudy Petschauer at the Cellar the weekend of the 15th-17th;
* Nick LaRiviere's CD release concert at the Cellar Jan 23rd;
* The Tony Wilson Trio at Presentation House in North Vancouver Wed. Jan 13th (see http://vancouverjazz.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3475);
* the newly-announced Mississippi Sheiks Tribute Concert at Capilano Theatre Mar. 13th/14th (see http://www.capilanou.ca/news-events/...nces/folk.html);
* the Jelly Roll Morton in Vancouver Celebration at the Patricia Hotel Jan. 15th (see http://www.cbc.ca/bc/community/blog/...r-concert.html);
* members of the Anthony Braxton 12+1 Ensemble and Genome Project at the end of January (see http://www.coastaljazz.ca/concert/an...ton_12_1_tet_0 and http://www.coastaljazz.ca/concert/an...genome_project) and the Time Flies Festival of Improvised Music Feb 4-6th (see http://www.coastaljazz.ca/concert/ti...music_festival)
* Capilano University's Tribute to Thelonious Monk Jan. 22nd etc. (see http://www.capilanou.ca/news-events/...nces/jazz.html)
* Phil Minton's Feral Choir at Ironworks Jan. 24th (see http://www.newmusic.org/feralchoir.htm) and
* The Lost Fingers at the Winterruption Festival Feb. 19th (see http://www.coastaljazz.ca/concert/lost_fingers_0)
* whew!

Also managed to pay tribute to a legendary NYC jazz broadcaster Ed Beach with his Wes Montgomery theme song and an excerpt from a 60s-era broadcast from his Just Jazz Radio Program. (Many North American jazz radio programs are playing Wes Montgomery's So Do It this week in recognition of Ed Beach's passing.) And a tribute to the late Lhasa whose concerts were always warmly received in Vancouver who passed away tragically on New Year's Day.

Unfortunately the hoped-for interview with Joey DeFrancesco didn't work out due to his travel arrangements but I did manage to catch up with him at the Sunday evening gig for a couple of questions. I asked him how his period of time with Miles Davis came about and he said that Miles saw him on television in Philadelphia, phoned him up and asked him to join Miles' band. Joey was all of 17 years old when he went out on the road with Miles and Joey said they got to be pretty close over the years.

The session at the Cellar on Sunday was a real party stuffed to the rafters with family, friends, musicians and music lovers. The band was really hitting on all cylinders with Chris Davis deserving a special mention. The tunes were hip but didn't suffer from over familiarity, arrangements were soulful but not simplistic, the solos all had a narrative arc that didn't waste a note. I'm sure it's going to be a great record.

Coming up on the A-Trane:

January 15th - I'll be doing an interview with Jerry Weldon in advance of his gig at the Cellar, and I'll be giving away tickets for the Herb Alpert/Lani Hall performance and the Tribute to Thelonious Monk performance at Capilano Theatre Jan. 22nd and 24th respectively. (see http://www.capilanou.ca/news-events/...nces/jazz.html)

January 22nd - I'll be doing an interview with Nick LaRiviere in advance of his CD release gig at the Cellar November 23rd, fabulous first release with a stellar line-up of west coast musicians, highly recommended!

January 29th - a feature on the music of Anthony Braxton in advance of his performances in Vancouver that weekend.

It just gets busier from here on in ....

Started the show off with a mini-retrospective of Mr. Taste, the late Ed Thigpen, in the company of John Coltrane, Oscar Peterson, and his own groups in his two outings as a leader.

A few previews of upcoming shows included tenor saxophonist Jerry Weldon at the Cellar, trombonist Nick LaRiviere with his CD release concert at the Cellar and saxophonist Saul Berson at O'Douls.

Thanks to the crew at Capilano Theatre for providing pairs of tickets for give-away to the Tribute to Thelonious Monk Friday Jan. 22nd and the sold-out Herb Alpert/Lani Hall show Jan. 24th (see http://www.capilanou.ca/news-events/...nces/jazz.html) - and thanks for all the phone calls.

The Monk-flavoured set let into music by Anthony Braxton and his cohorts in advance of shows at the end of the month (see http://vancouverjazz.com/2010/01/ant...ic-genome.html for details).

The reading of the Raven by Christopher Walken did triple duty celebrating Edgar Allan Poe's birthday as well as the presentation of Nevermore: The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe at the PuSH Festival (see http://pushfestival.ca/index.php?mpa...age=main&id=99) as well as the upcoming performance of Hal Willner's Neil Young Project at the Cultural Olympiad (see http://www.vancouver2010.com/more-20...-_70660zv.html).

And new and recent releases from Seamus Blake, Field Trip, Carol Sudhalter and Kat Parra.

On the A-Trane tomorrow, an interview with trombonist Nick LaRiviere, some new releases and a bewildering number of upcoming shows. Stay on top of it ....

Tomorrow's A-Trane

A couple of features on for tomorrow:

Pianist Peter Zak and saxophonist Walt Weiskopf are performing at the Cellar this weekend
with Darren Radtke and Bernie Arai as part of the on-going Cross-Border Jazz Series.
Peter and Walt will be dropping by the studio for a chat around 3:30 tomorrow afternoon.

The Anthony Braxton road show rolls into town for two epic performances this weekend
and I'll be doing a feature on Braxtonia as well.

New releases and previews of other events will flash by too quickly I'm sure ...

Other shows on the horizon, Monk Tribute and Herb Alpert/Lani Hall concerts at Capilano Theatre. So we started with some Monk/Trane and worked in Hal Willner's eclectic Monk tribute connected to both the upcoming Cultural Olympiad Neil Young tribute but also an oblique connection to Tuli Kupferberg of The Fugs - that night Willner had organized an NYC benefit for Tuli who has incapacitated by a stroke since last year.

Other previews included: Ian McDougall (Cellar), Ingrid Jenson (South Surrey) and Anthony Braxton (12+1tet/Sonic Genome). And new releases from Jacques Schwarz-Bart and Ashley Brown.

Most of the show handed over to getting ready for Anthony Braxton's phenomenal performances both with the 12tet and the Sonic Genome, dug deep into his history with performances from every decade since (and including) the sixties from solo to quartet to large ensemble, from alto to piano to contrabass clarinet.

Also had time for a visit from saxophonist Walt Weiskopf and pianist Peter Zak who were performing at the Cellar for another installment of Cross-Border jazz, that cross-border collaboration series which has seen many great visitors. A free-wheeling discussion which touched on Weiskopf's tours with Steely Dan and Zak's current position at the New School and well as playing and discussing their own music separately and together.

Other recent releases from Mary Halvorson's trio and Thirteenth Assembly (for both the Braxton groups and Time Flies), Dutch trumpeter Eric Vloeimans' Fugimundi (upcoming at Winterruption), and pianist Ramona Barthwick with guest Ingrid Jenson coming to both South Surrey and (later in the spring) Capilano Theatre.

Getting a late start to the show this Friday Feb 5th, getting going at 3 pm with guests in the studio trumpeter Taylor Ho Bynum and guitarist Mary Halvorson who both performed in Braxton's groups last week and appear in the Time Flies Festival of Improvised Music this weekend. Lots more new releases and upcoming shows, tune in and get on it ...
