It all happened round midnight with some 50 year-old Olatunji dreaming of a new dawn ... filled the show out with some timely tunes (well Bud, which is it? Time Flies or Time Waits?); drummers are most concerned with time and (not surprisingly) they're well-represented here. Blakey even snuck in a look at the blue moon! A Christmas Day fire apparently damaged a Vancouver jazz landmark, the original Cellar nightclub which operated in the late 50s/early 60s and hosted a who's who of talent over the years. (See http://www.jazzstreetvancouver.ca/venues/1 for more details, unfortunately Gregg Simpson's site which hosts a very nice history of the Cellar with a great photo-gallery appears to be off-line at the moment.) As a tribute to the original Cellar, I dug up a few recordings associated with the old Cellar - the legendary Harold Land/Elmo Hope/Scott LaFaro recording which was surreptitiously recorded at the Cellar, Kenneth Patchen with the Al Neil Quartet which had its genesis at the Cellar although it was recorded at the CBC, and the Mongomery Brothers which was recorded afterhours at the Cellar. (Thanks to Gavin Walker for pointing out that last one, I didn't know about the Cellar or Vancouver association.) [More recent reports indicate that the building which housed the Cellar may have missed the worst of the fire.] Finished up with a look ahead to the Cellar appearance of Joey DeFrancesco for the recording session with Cory Weeds on Jan 8/9/10 and the beat goes on....
