Herbie Spanier
I was listening to a Herbie Spanier track from his Anthology Vol.2 recording. The track is " Chemise pour L'eglise" It is clearly a quintet playing this tune. Yet the liner notes, by Len Dobbin" and Tom Lord's disco, list the group as being a quartet, with Spanier, Sadik Hakim, Roland Haynes and Keith "Spike McEndry. Recording date of 1969.
Would anyone know who the reed player was? I suspect it was Brian Barley. Best wishes to all for a Happy New Year Arnold |

I don't know the answer to your question, but I sure have had some wonderful times hanging out with Spike. He is a wonderful guy, and a real source of information about the glory years of the Montreal scene. He also taught me how to play snooker!!

I'm in touch with Roland Haynes. I'll ask.

I just listened to the track in question and the notes on the album are a bit confusing as to the personnel on each track but they are very informative otherwise as only Len Dobbin could be. My ears tell me that it's Brian Barley on soprano as it was recorded on 1969 in Quebec City soon after the 1969 Montreal tracks.
