Dave McMurdo passes away.

I just got the sad news that Vancouver born trombonist/composer/bandleader Dave McMurdo has passed away. Big Dave left Vancouver in 1969 for Toronto and became one of the movers and shakers of the Toronto and International Jazz scene. His teaching, playing, writing and bandleading skills will be missed as well as his gruff demeanor which only hid a compassionate, kindly and very humerous man who contributed much to our beloved music.

Dave McMurdo was born on March 4, 1944 in Isleworth, England but raised in Vancouver, he studied music at UBC and became a pro during the 60's and became a regular member of Bobby Hales Band as well as playing in numerous bands before departing for Toronto in 1969.

Dave also played in Boss Brass

I played in Dave's Big Band at UBC in the 1960s.
Soon after graduating, Dave moved to Toronto
and did well - playing and teaching.
He had a lot of leadership talent and some of the
top guys in Toronto played in the Dave McMurdo
big band that gained popularity after Rob MacConnell
called it quits to leading the awesome Boss Brass in which
Dave was a member in the later stages. His real forte
was teaching, however. He taught music at Mohawk College
in Hamilton for many years. Yeah, Dave sometimes showed a
gruff side, Gavin. But he endeared himself to a lot of talented
young musicians and he'll be missed. The obit in today's
Globe says he died 'suddenly'.
