Oh just bring it on! Minus 19 one day, blizzards, freezing rain,
hill-sides sliding, cars sliding, brilliant sunlight burning through the
windows on other days and all in one month. What next? Locusts? But I
won't Jeremiah you. Let us look to music and see what jazz can do to
warm our hearts.

On Valentine's day Bunches Bistro on 111-1880 Springfield Rd. is
offering Jazz with Cathy-Ann Wells (vocals), Neville Bowman (keyboard),
Martin Lord (drums) and Cameron Ward (bass). Give the lady a chance to
put on her red shoes and come down and dance.

The Vernon Jazz Clubat 3000-31st St, Vernon or at
www.vernonjazz.homestead.com is bringing in the John Gilliat Quartet on
February 26th. John's group is coming from a date in Cranbrook and then
on to The University College of the Cariboo in Kamloops before their
arrival in Vernon.

As a nine year old John began guitar. He was touring across Canada and
the US after high school playing venues such as Harrah's Tahoe and MGM
Grand in LA. As a 26 year old, he began Flamenco guitar studies
practicing eight to ten hours daily. John has some impressive credits to
his name and is an experienced, accomplished musician. Check him out at
http://members.shaw.ca/gilliat/live.htm.

Saturday night, February 26th will be a real coup for the Okanagan Jazz
and Blues society. An incredible line up of talent will be at the OUC
KLO campus Grand Theatre. Playing at 8 pm. Joani Taylor (vocals), Bob
Murphy (piano), Buff Allen (drums) and Ken Lister (bass) for only $20 at
the door or $17 advance. OJBS members' tickets are $17/ $15.

Joani has flown the world singing in Taiwan, San Francisco, the
Vancouver Jazz Festival, and Australia. Mark Miller of the Toronto Globe
& Mail has said, “ (Bob is) One of Canada's great pianists in the modern
idiom.”

Perhaps it is best to quote the musically gifted, and
linguistically gifted P.J. Perry about this duo:

"In the beginning there was Bob and Joani... partners in love and music.
They went separate ways in life. (Joani's) voice... so rich and full of
nuance that only a lifetime of loving, honest care could bring. Add to
this classic beauty the experience and originality of Bob
Murphy....To-gether their music remains exquisite and it sounds to me
very much like the love has remained.”

And how about that Buff Allen on drums? How many artists can say he
played with Hugh Fraser, Moe Koffman, Roger Whittaker and on Mr.
Dressup. Buff has previously appeared in Kelowna's Jazz Master's concert
for a summer school program. And Ken Lister's bass sound has been heard
in various groups in our town, as well. He is a skilled and versatile
musician. He is coming to us after gigs at the University of Calgary
with Hugh Fraser and moves on to play with Pat Coleman in Nanaimo.

What's up in Penticton? An interesting item appears in the Penticton
Herald about Ken Gray, priest at St. Stephen's Anglican Church who has
been awarded $12,000 US for a three month sabbatical titled “All That
Holy Jazz: A convergence of Music and Spirit.” Theologically the focus
is on Thomas Merton who had a personal interest in jazz.

For young musicians or those interested in extending their musical
knowledge the Lake Country is offering a Coffee House & Song Circle from
7:30 pm to 10:30 pm at the Creekside Theatre. Contact Joan Young
766-1390 or the Creekside Theatre. Admission if $2 and the coffee is
free. Not freezing.

While the weather is in transition, there is a very real feeling that
the town of Kelowna is in transition as well. What music venues will
offer both a place to be heard and a living wage to local musicians?
What type of music will survive? Demand/supply/demand a chicken and egg
conundrum. It is up to you. Jazz makers let me know where, when, what's
what. www.hansonward.com to publicize the wonder of you.

Support jazz and keep the music all live.
