Saxophone players front and centre on this edition of the A-Trane - not by design but by a confluence of reeds. Joe Henderson took the theme and we continued by celebrating the 50th anniversary of Coltrane's legendary stand at the Village Vanguard in 1961.

Then had a chat with Phil Dwyer about his acclaimed new release Changing Seasons, you can find the details at http://vancouverjazz.com/2011/11/changing-seasons-phil-dwyer-in-conversation.html.

Concert previews included Eric Alexander with Harold Mabern, Cory Weeds, Gary Smulyan, Ernesto Cervini/Joel Frahm, Sharon Minemoto, Fran Jare, Bassekou Kouyate and Kronos Quartet with Homayun Sakhi - whew!

Birthday celebrations for Phil Woods and Don Byas. And a fine bass clarinet feature from Avram Fefer for even more fun ... N

The under-rated Gerald Wiggins took the theme, then into a couple of Round Midnights from the 1st and 2nd great Miles quintets, the former a lesser known version with Trane and the latter from the recent Official Bootleg Paris 1967 - hope to feature more of this again soon, lots of wondrous music!

Then a surprise visit from Coat Cooke and Rainer Wiens in advance of the Now Orchestra/Orkestre Futura Phoenix Rising concert at the Roundhouse featuring compositions from Joane Hétu as well as Rainer Wiens.

After Thora's Burgers, I was still hungry for more creative large ensemble music so we continued with recent releases from L'Orkestre Des Pas Perdus, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey and Steven Bernstein's Millennial Territory Orchestra - mmmmm, tasty ....

Concert previews for Cory Weeds, and Ernesto Cervini/Joel Frahm (with a fun recent release from Joan Stiles), an ode to Remembrance Day with Al Henderson's Regeneration Suite and the weather reflected in Phil Dwyer's Autumn.

Finished the show with a sequence of November 11th birthdays - Buck Clayton, Mario Pavone (with an oblique Count Basie tribute), Mose Allison, and Mark Shim from a recent Carlo De Rosa release, how did that all fit in 3 hours?

Recently discovered the earliest known recording of the A-Train theme - an aircheck which predates Duke's first commercial recording by about a month! Had to include it to open the Ducal feature in advance of the Fred Stride/Dee Daniels/Marcus Mosely concert of Ellington's Sacred Music.

In our adventure, Duke shows Trane his Little Brown Book, and Dee Daniels, The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra and Duke with Johnny Hodges and Alice Babs all read from it in glorious celebration.

Upcoming concert features for Nancy Walker (in a few settings), Ted Quinlan (in a couple), Jillian Lebeck (two more), Gary Smulyan and John Mayer (the other one) with Roy McCurdy.

The Sheila Jordan feature did double duty for both Sheila's 83rd birthday and Kate Hammett-Vaughan's Tribute Concerts to Sheila at the Cellar. Sheila's remarkable recordings spanned 45 years finishing with the poignant shout out to the late Len Dobbin on his favorite of Sheila's songs The Crossing.

From Winter Sunshine to Phil Dwyer's Winter and a big DanJam Band feature for Anna Weber. I've been hearing a lot of vibist Jason Adasiewicz recently and liking it so there's another set down. Snuck in Matana Robert's Lulla-bye after Nica's Dream (should it have been the other way around?) and then off to bed ....

This A-Trane largely turned over to a tribute to the great Paul Motian who passed away earlier this week at the age of 80. The fact that the show remained so varied is a tribute in itself to his flexibility, his longevity and his innate musicality which made his deft touch essential to so many contexts. Collaborations featured included Eddie Costa, Tony Scott, Bill Evans, Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett, Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, Gord Grdina and his own projects featuring amongst others Bill Frisell, Joe Lovano, Jason Moran, Chris Potter, Charles Brackeen, Chris Cheek, Ben Monder, and the list goes on. In the next few weeks, I'll try to squeeze in more of the (many) projects and collaborations which there simply wasn't time to touch on in a single show.

Also took some interludes for upcoming (at that time) concerts Gary Smulyan with Ray Drummond and Kenny Washington, The Hard Rubber Orchestra's Canadian Jazz Composers included Hugh Fraser, Oscar Peterson and Kenny Wheeler. Jaclyn Guillou (also celebrating a birthday), Michael Blake (in town for gigs and a recording session) and Saul Berson (still upcoming Wednesday at the Cellar).
