I am very excited to be releasing my brand new CD "THE STATE OF BLISS" at THE CELLAR this May 23rd and 24th . I will be appearing with Bill Coon, Darren Radtke and Dave Robbins, an all star trio for certain. We will be playing a number of tunes from the new CD and perhaps some other material. Webmeister Brian Nation suggested that I post some information about my newest release:

Torben Oxbol was the producer of "The State Of Bliss" and to him I owe a great debt. No one works harder and is more dedicated to the process of recording a CD. It was Torben's suggestion that we make a CD that would include three different rhythm sections. That wonderful idea enabled me to record with a number of great Vancouver jazz musicians all for the same project. One of the big thrills for me was the chance to record with the Canadian vocal sensation Denzal Sinclaire . A thrill indeed to sing two duets with someone who inspires and delights me with his talent, warmth and wisdom.
It really was fun planning who might be in each of the rhythm sections. I have always enjoyed putting together different groupings of musicians to see what the musical result might be. For the Bliss CD I knew that I really wanted to record with two of my musical heros: Bob Murphy and Campbell Ryga. I thought that they, in combination with Dave Robbins and Darren Radtke would make for an interesting and dynamic group. Typically Dave and Darren would be in a group with Bill Coon and in fact Bill + Darren + Dave is a combination that I often sing with but for the recording I had another idea in mind. I loved the sound that they were able to achieve as a group; there was an intensity there that I had imagined would be possible with those four guys together. I also wanted a real "swing machine " group to sing the duets with Denzal and also for a couple of standards that I had chosen to record and in that I found Bill Coon, Ross Taggart, Ken Lister and Craig Scott: "swinging, sensitive and s'wonderful" would be my alliterative terms to describe that combination. For the third rhythm section I put together what I have come to dub the "painter's trio" with Lou Mastroianni, Steve Holy and Tom Foster . This group truly painted an aural type of watercolor canvas in which I was able to sing. Here I also included three horn players for a couple of the tracks: Brad Turner on flugelhorn and Bill Abbott on soprano saxophone on the title track and Dennis Esson wistful and elegant on the trombone for another track.
I feel honored to have recorded with these wonderful Vancouver musicians and I thank them for putting their hearts and talents into the music. They gave me the musical bliss that I sought…
