Last Friday was an action-packed musical evening in Vancouver with concerts available from Saul Berson (at O'Doul's), The Inhabitants (at the Western Front) and Michael Blake with Ben Perowsky and a new edition of Blake Tartare (at the Cellar). Although the A-Trane touched on the first two, the show circled around Blake's wonderful Tribute to Eli "Lucky" Thompson providing an opportunity to feature both Thompson's original recordings (including our theme) but also Blake's stupendous tribute.
Unfortunately due to some personal emergencies, I didn't make it out to any music last weekend but I'm told that Cory Weeds will be putting up some of Michael Blake's Cellar performance from Saturday evening on his podcast: http://chasinthetrain.podomatic.com/ Watch his blog (http://cweeds.wordpress.com/) for details.
Other upcoming concert features from saxophonist Jean-Pierre Zanella with Jan Jarczyk at the Cellar last Sunday, The Effendi Records Jazz Lab (with Remi Bolduc, Frank Lozano & John Roney) upcoming at the Cellar November 17/18, The Hard Rubber Orchestra celebrating their 25th Anniversary November 13th at SFU Woodwards and Benjamin Herman appearing at the Western Front on November 20th.
Also managed to squeeze in some fabulous new releases from Mary Halvorson with Jon Irabagon, Mario Pavone with Tony Malaby, and Eugene Marlowe with Michael Hashim.
This Friday November 12th, I'll be speaking with saxophonist Benjamin Herman around 4:30 pm; should be an interesting chat with a gentleman who has recorded with drummer Tony Allen, Candy Dulfer and Misha Mengelberg and still found the time (and style) to be voted the Best Dressed Man in the Netherlands by Esquire Magazine!
Come as you are .....

Caught up with Dutch saxophonist Benjamin Herman in Miami at the start of his tour which brings his quartet to the Western Front this Saturday November 20th to close out Coastal's Fall for Jazz series. The chat and tunes covered both his current Mengelberg tribute project (via Coltrane through Dolphy through Mengelberg) and his larger acid jazz ensemble The New Cool Collective and their collaboration with Afro-beat pioneer Tony Allen. (Besides Herman I'm looking forward to hearing his amazing guitar player Anton Goudsmit this weekend!)
On the calendar The Hard Rubber Orchestra celebrated their 20th Anniversary last Saturday at SFU Woodwards with a retrospective concert with numerous guests and alumni; for an ensemble that doesn't revisit their older material very often, they've got a great book of tunes. The concert was a real celebration, congratulations to John Korsrud and everybody involved! Even managed to squeeze in their latin alter-ego, Orquesta Goma Dura!
Also upcoming, The Effendi Records Jazz Lab (with Remi Bolduc, Frank Lozano & John Roney) at the Cellar November 17/18, Zapato Negro at the Cellar November 19/20 and the Duke Ellington Sacred Music featuring Dee Daniels at St. Andrews Wesley on the 19th.
A couple of birthdays (David Amram 80 and Mario Pavone 70), some recent releases (Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra/Jimmy Heath, David Braid/Canada Brass and the Either/Orchestra), and some other stuff just for fun ....
By the way, after a short misfire last week, this week's show is available for streaming and download again on the station archives:

Some busy musical previews for last weekend: the Duke Ellington Sacred Music featuring Dee Daniels at St. Andrews Wesley on Friday the 19th, and Zapato Negro at the Cellar Friday/Saturday November 19/20 with a dizzy Chano Pozo side trip through David Amram and the new Conrad Herwig latin tribute to Herbie Hancock.
More side trips with PJ Perry featured with Billy Mays' Jazzy Nutcracker (http://www.capilanou.ca/news-events/performing-arts/season-performances/jazz.html) and Darcy James Argue miraculously in Europe and the Globe and Mail (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/arts/music/darcy-argue-low-profile-canadian-jazzman/article1805941/).
Also featured a look ahead to a couple of the Cross-Border Jazz performances upcoming at the Cellar, Jim Snidero and Paul Bollenback (Nov 26/27) and Jeremy Pelt and Danny Grissett (Dec 3/4).
Benjamin Herman's quartet put on a spectacular sold-out show at the Western Front giving ebullient funny (but informative) introductions to his originals and (mainly) settings of Misha Mengelberg's compositions - everything from a dedication to Peter Brotzmann (a two note theme that MM said Brozziman never did get right) to the "impossible to play" proto-bop piece that MM wrote for Eric Dolphy (and Eric Dolphy died two weeks later) to the South Africa-tinged Kwela piece written for Dudu Pukwana. Anton Goutsmit's guitar was a perfect foil Herman's saxophone (and as wildly eclectic) veering from straight-ahead jazz lines to a "Peaches and Herb" guitar dialog to avant-surf music. All in all a fun evening - but it wasn't over yet.
Later the same night over at 1067, a packed house heard a two-bari front line take on Chad Makela's arrangements of Coltrane's music. Resolution --> India and Cousin Mary (I have to admit, I've never before heard a crowd cheer when a band announced they were going to play Cousin Mary!). The second set largely given over to the four pieces that make up Mediations with Impressions as an encore. The sextet did an excellent job overall although I thought it lacked a bit of the over-the-top ferocious transcendence that comes out in parts of Meditations. Chad and Bill Runge seamlessly traded bari lines back and forth but I particularly enjoyed some of Dave Sikula's inverting and playing with some of the melodic lines on the electric guitar. Interesting to note that four of the sextet (Chad, Bill, Andre Lachance and Bernie Arai) were performing in the Ellington performance at St. Andrew's United Church the evening before, an interesting contrast in sacred music!
Trumpeter JP Carter dropped by towards the end of the show on Friday for an impromptu chat around the "unofficial" CD release event for The Aeroplane Trio at 1067 Friday evening. If you missed that, JP also has an Inhabitants gig coming up at the release event for Alicia Hansen's new CD Fractography at VCC King Edward Dec 10th (see http://ca.brownpapertickets.com/event/136583 for details).
That's it for last week - this Friday, a bit of a late start at 3 pm but I'll try to play faster tunes so you won't notice ....

Started half an hour late and didn't play tunes that were too fast (except maybe Danny Gatton).
Healthy mix of stuff, upcoming (as of last Friday) Jim Snidero and Paul Bollenback (Cellar Nov 26/27), Dylan Cramer (Cellar Nov 28), Jeremy Pelt and Danny Grissett (Cellar Dec 3/4), PJ Perry/Campbell Ryga featured with Bill Mays' Jazzy Nutcracker (http://www.capilanou.ca/news-events/performing-arts/season-performances/jazz.html), Orkestra Futura/Now Orchestra's Hear it Now 2010: Shake the Walls (http://www.noworchestra.com/) and the CD release event for Alicia Hansen's new CD Fractography at VCC King Edward Dec 10th (http://ca.brownpapertickets.com/event/136583).
Since many American friends were celebrating Thanksgiving, we recognized National Holidays with some turkey stuffing and some other choice offerings.
This week I'll have a pair of tickets to give away to Bill Mays' Jazzy Nutcracker on Dec 12th (and I'll play some too!) and equal time to a jazzy Hanukkah; might find some time to squeeze in some Grammy nominations (http://www.grammy.com/nominees?year=2010&genre=16) and other upcoming tidbits.
