Gregg Simpson

This session from December 15th, 1965, is the only music ever recorded in the Sound Gallery. It was the first session of the newly formed Al Neil Trio, playing in what was then my painting studio, a rented store front on 4th Avenue at Bayswater in Vancouver.
It is amazing to hear the transition Al was making then from hard bop and modal jazz to a tumultuous, but always lyrical free jazz. At 18, bassist Richard Anstey and I really had our hands full.
