Tonight's show will be from a past broadcast done on June 18, 2007. The Feature at a little after 11pm is one of Sonny Rollins' great albums and a recording of his only film score which was the music from the original movie "Alfie" starring Michael Caine. The music is not the short clips from the film itself but a studio session where Rollins and a fine orchestra put together by Oliver Nelson play full length versions of all the tunes that Sonny played in the movie. Of course all of them are Rollins' compositions.
Mr. Nelson assembled a fine band of all-star players to back Sonny on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar, the underrated Roger Kellaway on piano, Walter Booker on bass and the dynamic Frankie Dunlop on drums. This is one of Sonny Rollins' finest recordings from this period (1965-66)and is the Jazz Feature. If you are not out at the Jazz Festival, make a date with your radio or your computer (www.citr.ca)......the (http://www.citr.ca)......the) music starts at 9pm. Gavin will be back in person on July 6 with a long tribute to the great alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano.
