Was anyone else as blown away by this show as I was? Having gotten into Tim Berne and Bloodcount in particular over the past year I was very excited to see they were coming and they did not disappoint. Great compositions, great blowing, seemless transitions. I thought Tim's comment about encores was also spot on (for that band). The second (continuous) set was all I needed. I'm sure they were all tired and ready to get out of that hot room, as you could see the sweat dripping.

Great choice for a festival closer. I missed the whole fest for too many reasons to mention. Missing out on Bloodcount may be my biggest regret. Last time I heard them was over a decade ago at Studio 16, on another scorching hot night with the doors wide open. I'm finally coming to appreciate Berne and his crazy writing, so I should've been there... Was it like a 60-75 min. set?

I saw Jim Black at O'douls afterwards... he arrived to late to sit in, but we talked for a bit. He said they hadn't played in 8 years or something! I wish I'd seen the show, but I was jazzfested out by that point... Also getting into Ironworks with an artist's pass is a dicey proposition, as I discovered last year. :(

Jim Black had a busy night, just before his gig at Ironworks with Bloodcount, he played in a trio called Azul with Portuguese bassist Carlos Bica and German guitarist Frank Mobus at the Roundhouse. Fabulous stuff, one of my personal discoveries of this year's fest. But they were all drenched by the time Bloodcount got off the stage pretty close to 1:30 or so. I'm pretty amazed that anything was still going when he got to O'Douls, much less that he wanted to sit in!

PS. I'll try to put together a festival diary, I actually made it out every night this year!
