Too many things to feature this week, Miles Black at the Cellar (with a piece from the cd with Roger Baird), and upcoming artists at Festival Vancouver - Jeanette Lindstrom/Chris Gestrin, Zapato Negro, Amanda Tosoff. A few things by the late Sal Mosca - Sonny Dallas, Johnny Frigo, Art Davis and Earl Turbinton will have to wait til next week! And now sadly, Paul Rutherford as well.

Also played the second half of the Fraser MacPherson Our Blues CD and in response to the Vintage Vancouver posting by Guy, a few movements of Dizzy Gillespie's recording of Lalo Schifrin's Gillespiana. In an offline discussion, Guy has graciously offered to lend me a recording of the full Vancouver recording of the Gillespiana Suite with Conte Candoli to play on the show next Friday August 10th, so tune in and check it out.

Again each file is an hour, the show starts about 8 minutes into the first file and the last file misses the last 8 minutes but you get the idea.

How come they tell you but they don't tell me?

PS After posting this query I got a bot email telling me my messages mailbox was full, how's that for service? It was even pre-dated to last night!

Again many thanks to Guy MacPherson for sharing both recordings, the recording of Lalo Schifrin's Gillespiana Suite in Vancouver featuring Conte Candoli and the recording of Lalo Schifrin's Jazz Suite on the Mass Texts which is approximately the same vintage, and both fabulous pieces of music.

For completeness, here's the cbc announcer for the Gillespiana Suite:

We begin this CBC Wednesday night broadcast before an invited audience in the ballroom of the Hotel Vancouver. During the next 50 minutes we are to hear a performance of a jazz suite written by the young South American composer Boris Schifrin. The suite is called Gillespiana, the work recently dedicated to the well-known American jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie, who led the first public performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival last year. Gillespiana is scored for a featured jazz quintet together with a large scale brass and percussion group: four trumpets, four trombones, three french horns, one tuba, bongos, timbales and timpani. The conductor of this performance is Dave Robbins, and the featured soloist in the quintet is the noted American trumpeter Conte Candoli. The other members, all being Vancouver musicians: Fraser MacPherson on flute and alto saxophone; Chris Gage, piano; Paul Ruhland, bass; and Al Johnson, drums. The suite is written in five contrasting movements and in part consists of a blending of South American rhythms and sonorities with those of the jazz idiom, one of the reasons, incidentally, why the work was first dedicated to Dizzy Gillespie. The five movements go under the headings Prelude, Blues, Pan Americana, Africana, and Toccata. Dave Robbins directs the quintet and brass ensemble in the jazz suite Gillespiana by Boris Schiffrin.

and the CBC announcer for the Jazz Suite on the Mass Texts:
In this composition, Schifrin has taken portions of the English Mass, which both Anglican and Roman communities use, and scored them for jazz feelings and moods. The work is written for a jazz quintet, a 12-piece orchestra, and a chorus. Tonight’s performance will be conducted by Dave Robbins and the featured instrumentalist is Fraser MacPherson on flute, alto flute, alto sax, and clarinet. The University Chamber Singers from the University of British Columbia will be singing the choral part under the direction of Cortland Hultberg. The Jazz Suite on the Mass Texts is in eight short movements: Kyrie, Interludium, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Prayer, Offertory, and Agnus Dei.

This edition of Jazz Canadiana was produced in Vancouver by George Laverock, with the technical assistance of Don Hardesty.

Besides the two suites, I paid brief tribute to some of the musicians who have passed on recently; bassist Art Davis, bassist Sonny Dallas, bassist/violinist Johnny Frigo and saxophonist Earl Turbinton. Also previewed some of the Scandinavian musicians at Festival Vancouver, Winard Harper coming to the Cellar and the new release from Seamus Blake etc.

I was hoping to post the link for the show in the archives (I'd highly recommend checking the suites out if you didn't hear the broadcast!) but the archive seems to be unavailable at the moment. I'll post the link later or try to otherwise make the show available if I can't.

I'll be playing a lot of Max Roach on the show tomorrow, drop me a line or phone (604-684-7561) if you have any requests ... N

PS: Guy points out that the name of the ensemble that played Gillespiana is unknown (I've changed it from the Fraser MacPherson Ensemble) and that the vintage of the latter Jazz Suite is likewise unknown but I may be able to find out from George Laverock ... N

As promised, I did in fact play a lot of Max Roach and although I think I managed to touch on quite a few facets of his career, there are many more which remain untouched and groups and performances which need more reconsideration. (e.g. the duet recordings with Abdullah Ibrahim or Anthony Braxton or Cecil Taylor etc.) Took a detour only once to play some Winard Harper who's over at the Cellar this weekend.

I've discovered to my chagrin that the coop radio audio archive has been shut down for the time being, I do have mp3s of the shows but unfortunately nowhere to host them. (Anyone have any leads?) In the interim, if anyone has a burning desire to hear any of the shows whose playlist I've posted here (like the Lalo Schifrin performances from last week), drop me a line and I'll try to figure out a way to get it to you.

Next week, probably more Max and at the very least, some Paul Rutherford, Herb Pomeroy and other fun stuff for the dog days of August. Or is it the duck days of August?

Keep cookin' .... N

No special features today, just a sleepy afternoon of good tunes. Had a bit of a microphone problem so the first set ended up doing a survey of sax players with Miles in the early 60s - picked up the Seven Steps box recently. And some oblique Max Roach features with some great music.

I'm off to Hornby tomorrow and Cory's taking the trane next week, keep your lamps trimmed and burnin' ... N
