Upcoming American Masters profile of Ahmet Ertegun who died late last year;

KCTS broadcast times:
Wednesday, May 2, 2007 9:00 PM (KCTS)
Sunday, May 6, 2007 2:00 AM (KCTS)

From the KCTS website:
Ahmet Ertegun, a young Turk - literally - had a passion for the African-American music he heard in segregated clubs in Washington, DC, in the 1940s. He sent these sounds to England, where they merged with the European sensibility, and he brought this revolutionary new genre back across the ocean. He found Ray Charles, he introduced Eric Clapton to Aretha Franklin, he signed the Rolling Stones. He created talent and taste, he defined careers, he changed lives - Ertegun and his small Atlantic Records label determined the course of what music fans have listened to for decades.
He also nurtured important phases in the careers of folks like John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus and countless others. Should be interesting.

Yeah, it was great. I loved the quote, "I inhaled". He was talking about his life, and music! I wouldn't have minded a bit more on jazz - maybe that'll happen when Nesuhi gets his own bio. ;-)

American Masters is one of the great series. They haven't shyed away from featuring non-American born artists like Ertegun and Joni Mitchell. The recent one on Strayhorn was great. I see KCTS is showing the Judy Garland one tonight. Even if you're not a fan, try to catch the number she sings over the closing credits. Heavy.

I just saw most of it. Good stuff. I really would like to have met him & picked his brain on various things, among other things, his thoughts on commodification of art and being a Turk in the US. Either way, he seemed to be a true music lover and did so much for the industry. Like Al, I'd love to see a special on Nesuhi.

I have an unseen Ahmet Ertegun doc. on video here somewhere - not the American Masters one - something European that never found a home.

Does anyone have access to facilities for making a transfer from Euro-formats to North Amnerican ?

Might that be a broadcast of the Montreaux tribute to him from a few years back? There are some excerpts in the American Masters doc (on again tonight!) ... N

As far as I know now Nou - No it isn't.
Watched the American Masters prog and didn't recognise any of the shots as being sourced from this one.
It's an '80s production which, as I said, is unseen (by all except a small circle).
Couldn't place it anywhere at the time - forgot I had it - can't watch it now because of format.
