After being off for a couple of weeks (thanks to Cory and Marc Lindy for filling in), got a bit of a special feature for tomorrow, Friday March 9th. I have an excellent recording of an Alice Coltrane Quartet concert from last year at UCLA that I'll be featuring during the first half of the show both in recognition of International Women's Day and in memorial of her untimely passing in January. Features Ravi Coltrane, Reggie Workman and Trevor Lawrence from Feb 18, 2006 at Royce Hall.

As promised the first half of the show was handed over to one of Alice Coltrane's last live performances from February 2006 at Royce Hall at UCLA; an incredible performance also featuring Ravi Coltrane and Reggie Workman. Lotsa phone calls for this one!
The rest of the show was out of the bag with nods to upcoming performances by Amanda Tosoff, Andrew Hill and Kate Hammett-Vaughn. I'll have to get more of Francois Houle's Aerials on soon, it's been growing on me.
This Friday I'll pull out some of the latin jazz pieces that Fred Stride's Orchestra will be performing next week as well as their recent release on Cellar Live and the usual offbeat mix of great tunes. Requests always welcome ... N

As promised, a show 'somewhat' inspired by Fred Stride's upcoming Latin Jazz Concert at UBC, I played all the pieces he mentioned in his concert listing as well as some other Latin jazz and large ensemble jazz pieces including some selections from last year's Fred Stride Jazz Orchestra release on Cellar Live (go out and get this, it's great!) A nice coincidence with Chico O'Farrill's son Arturo O'Farrill playing piano with Carla Bley on a tribute to 'latin' composer Nino Rota!
Judging from all the phone calls, there's an untapped market for classic cubop and the (free!) show on Monday should be well received, go check it out! (Squeezed in a little Andrew Hill as well, I'm hoping to do a more extensive Andrew Hill retrospective first week of April).
Apparently, I have a pair of tickets to Metheny/Mehldau to give away next week (still trying to get a copy of their CD to play!), so check that out in the second half of the show. Should also have some previews of the announced (and not so announced) jazz fest series and the other usual stuff. If anything else comes up (Imagine the sound?), I'll let you know, later ... N

Wish I could make the show - that music has been a favorite of my for years. Kudo's to Fred Stride (and you) for shining some light on them. Nou, if you're looking for more Cubop to play, I assume Cory layed a copy of Zapato Negro on you? Let me know if you need a copy. Or I have a few dozen Cubop CD's if you want to borrow any!

As it turns out, I intended to play something from the Zapato Negro CD and at one point even had it queued up on the CD player but when I checked the time, I just ran out; 3 hours goes by faster than you might imagine. Anyway, maybe you'd like to come down and bring some of your faves in the latter half of April after fundraising season's over, could be fun ... N

For the A-Trane on Friday, I have a pair of tickets for the Metheny/Mehldau show on April 1st as well as two pairs of tickets for the final screening of Imagine the Sound next Wednesday March 28th. Just a reminder that only Coop radio members are eligible for the ticket giveaways (but you can join!)
I'll pull out some related tunes as well as some previews of the recently announced Jazz Fest series (Bebel Gilberto just added) and the usual mixed bag.
I don't think I'll have time to squeeze in (squeeze out?) any Kenny G but maybe Guy can get some on his comedy show...

Inspired by the Imagine the Sound film, got some Taylor/Shepp/Bley/Dixon on and gave away a couple of pairs of tickets - reminder: the last screening is Wednesday (tomorrow night) at 9:30 - don't miss it!
Also gave away a pair of tickets for the upcoming Metheny/Mehldau show. A couple of great Andrew Hill tunes (hopefully he'll be rescheduled), a few tunes from upcoming fest shows and taking it out with a new release on Cellar Live.
Cory's taking the show this Friday and I'll be back the week after; I was planning to do an extended Andrew Hill feature as a preview but I'm sure I'll dig up something. Requests, feedback and suggestions always welcome, thanks ... N
