I was quite moved by the Strayhorn special on PBS last week and decided to pull out a few Strayhorn rarities including a recording of Strayhorn singing (!) Lush Life accompanying himself on the piano. Coat Cooke came down for an impromptu hang; played some music in advance of upcoming gigs Frank Catalano, Michael Blake/Hellbent w. Steve Bernstein, Joey DeFrancesco, Zubot and Dawson and a couple of the artists from Festival Baobab.

I was sick last week (thanks to Serka for filling in at short notice with a Hits and Misses Parade feature for Lee Hazelwood) and Cory Weeds will be filling in next week. Get out and check out some tunes ... N

I promised a caller that I would find out more about the rare Billy Strayhorn Red Baron release with Billy doing the vocal on Lush Life, just found another copy on an auction web site for $200 US!

Although not initially released until 1992, 25 years after composer Billy Strayhorn's death, this is his definitive CD. Strayhorn is heard singing "Lush Life" while backed by the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1964 (his voice is not strong but his phrasing is quite sincere), jamming on piano with flügelhornist Clark Terry and Bob Wilbur (on clarinet and soprano) in a quintet, backing singer Ozzie Bailey, and taking a pair of piano solos ("Love Came" and "Baby Clementine"). These are very valuable and intriguing recordings, shedding some new light on a nearly invisible genius.
