Planning to do an (almost) all Coltrane show on the A-Trane tomorrow in celebration of what would have been Coltrane's 80th birthday this weekend with lots of goodies and rarities. If you've got any Coltrane requests, post a follow up to this message, send me a note or call into the studio 604-684-7561 tomorrow between 2:30 and 5:30.

Cheers ... N

The A-Trane on the air since 1986

Hey . . . that's like . . . er . . . twenty years! What was the date of the first show? You should throw an anniversary party! Were you on from the start, Nou? Refresh my memory.

Blues in the Dark must hold the record, though, for longest running show. Ron's been taking that bus downtown with his satchel full of records for close to thirty years, I think.

Hey . . . that's like . . . er . . . twenty years! What was the date of the first show? You should throw an anniversary party! Were you on from the start, Nou? Refresh my memory.

Blues in the Dark must hold the record, though, for longest running show. Ron's been taking that bus downtown with his satchel full of records for close to thirty years, I think.

I wasn't on from the start, it was actually Robert Kerr's show from about '83 (?) or so on; the jazz fest guys (Robert, Ken and John) hung out together at Coop Radio and fantasized about starting a jazz festival. I've told the story of getting involved with the first jazz festival in 86 elsewhere (http://vancouverjazz.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1665). At the end of that festival, the post festival party was at Chessa's house and we were all winding down and getting loaded and unloaded. Robert was getting married two weeks hence and was going on an African trip for a month for his honeymoon. So he was wandering around this party, asking various people if they'd like to do a radio show; when he asked me, I said - sure, sounds like fun.

I did my first show about a week later (which would put it about mid-July 1986) and Robert and I roughly alternated until this summer. With Robert taking up his post at Vanoc for the olympics stuff, something was going to have to give and it was the radio show. So it's all mine for the time being, although Cory and Tony Serka (who does the Hit and Miss Parade) have done occasional subs when I'm too busy at work.

But you're probably right about Ronnie, I'm always amazed because I hardly ever run into him anymore but whenever I turn on Coop on a Monday night, the blues are alive! I think Blues in the Dark is certainly the longest running music show; Redeye might have it for non-music shows - better than 30 years now ....
