I received Ashley Kahn's "A Love Supreme / The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album" for Christmas, and I highly recommend it. It's concise and to the point, quickly covering the years leading up to the recording, then going into detail as the historic sessions approached (December 9th and 10th, 1964). Lots of insider details that I wasn't aware of (the fact that the melody for "Psalm" is actually Trane reciting his poem through his horn, for example), and recollections from those involved. Lots of great pictures, and the hardcover edition is expecially attractive, the cover actually inscribed with a portrait of the great man himself. I also really enjoyed the sidebar profiles of Rudy Van Gelder, etc., inside. Check it out...
