Not exactly live music but still a lovely way to spend almost 2 hours. Swing is a movie at the Vancouver Film Fest about...well...howabout I just paraphrase the program guide write up:
Tony Gatlif (Latcho Drom, Vengo) returns with this charming coming-of-age tale, positively overflowing with brilliant Gypsy jazz guitar performances. ...Ten-year-old Max ...hears the manouche guitar playing of a Gypsy named Miraldo and is hooked. ... he secures a guitar, heads to the wrong side of town and begs Miraldo to teach him. Soon Max is enmeshed in Gypsy culture as he simultaneously begins to learn about music and life. The music here is of the Django Reinhardt school and is provided by Tchavolo Schmitt and Mandino Reinhardt, two masters who set the screen ablaze with their playing during the film's many impromptu party scenes.
Sadly, I found the plot quite scattered, but the music is worth it. Woo wee! The only other screening is Monday Sept 30 at 2pm at the Granville 7 cinema.
There are a few more music themed movies at the fest this year, if you're interested;
Ravi Shankar: Between Two Worlds
Honeyboy
Jimmy Scott: If You Only Knew
Only the Strong Survive
Standing in the Shadows of Motown
you can check out the write ups and times at www.viff.org (http://www.viff.org)
Please post reviews if any of you see anything so if there's another screening or if it comes back to town the rest of us will know if it's worthwhile.
Cheers! and see you at the movies!
