On August 20, 2006, Phil Dwyer Music and Milner Garden and Woodlands present "Jazz In The Garden". This event takes place on the grounds of the breathtaking Milner estate in Qualicum Beach. Relax on the lawn, overlooking the Georgia Straight and listening to some of Canada's finest musicians. This year's lineup includes the Phil Dwyer group with special surprise guests, Ian McDougal/Oliver Gannon/Ron Johnson/Ken Lister, Tom Keenlyside & Altered Laws (w/Miles Black, Miles Hill, Graham Boyle), and the "Milner Gardens All Stars Big Band" with very special guest vocalist Karin Plato. Why would anyone want to take a newspaper to such a great gig?

Actually I think I might be doing an island cycling trip around then, I'll try to see if I can work our schedule around it; thanks for the early heads up ... N

I am very happy to be adding Ingrid Jensen and Jon Wikan to the Jazz In The Garden line-up. They will be playing in a small group with me, and also in the big band (Derry Byrne, Ian McDougal, Tom Keenlyside, David French etc) which will back up Karin Plato. I'm sure most of you are familiar with Ingrid's successes, Jon is a fabulous drummer who plays with Geoff Keezer. This will be an amazing afternoon of music. If you like music. Otherwise I think the mini-golf in Parksville is open, and Pat the owner is an old friend of mine. Either way you are covered.

The mini-golf in Parksville is the Disneyland of all mini-golf. What do you do if you like both music and minigolf?

Sounds killin', Phil... I'll try to schedule a fishing trip with my uncle up there around that time so I can kill 2 birds with one stone. Sounds like a great line up.

I don't know, it's never happened before.

Tickets for this event are now on sale. See http://www.mala.ca/MilnerGardens/special-events.asp for more information.

I'm actually more excited about this event than I am about the Vancouver jazz festival, which I'll also be attending, although only for a couple of days. It's the minigolf, I think.

In addition to the already fabulous lineup for the Jazz in the Garden concert on Aug 20 in Qualicum, I am very pleased to announce that some more great musicians will be joining the Milner All Stars big band to back up the wonderful Karin Plato. Saxes Christine Jensen, David French and Perry White will join Tom Keenlyside to form a truly amazing sax section. Driving things from the drum chair will be my old friend Alan Jones, one of the best drummers I have met in life. This band will be rocking. I better go, I've run out of superlatives.

Perry will not be there, sorry girls. I am really lucky to have twisted Joel Miller's arm into stepping in. Also Christine and Ingrid will be doing a small group thing together with me, Ken Lister, and Jon Wikan.
