First off, congrats to Festival Vancouver, they put on a great festival not only of jazz music but some great classical and world music (and everything else)
I was at the "Joy Of Sax" program at the Orpheum last nite and although I'll make it short, I have to say something about the sound tech (yet again) There was no consistent balance between the band, rhythm section and soloists and he reduced to band to a level where they sounded like they were being miked with a tin can in a tile washroom. It was a joy to see Phil Woods and Bud Shank (and of course Campbell as always) but at $54 a ticket, shouldn't I expect good sound?
Even at the Commodore Thursday nite with Goma Dura, the 12 piece horn section only sounded like a 4 piece. The saxes were buried, the trumpets were either WAY to loud, or WAY to soft and the trombones were unheard... except for the solos that peeled paint 3 blocks away. It's just too bad to see great shows ruined (or at least tainted) by bad sound.
