Sorry for the late notice - I just tuned in myself:
WKCR (http://www.columbia.edu/cu/wkcr/)
Update: Sorry, I'm sure they said "all day". Anyway, it's over. Hope some of you caught it (especially you, Al). Had Bauza live in the studio, conversation with Bauza and Chico O'Farrill from the archive, rare Machito recordings, etc etc

Yeah, I wish they had a mailing list so I wouldn't keep missing these shows. Two weeks ago they did a Coleman Hawkins all day birthday tribute. A year or two ago, I think, it was Trane non-stop for like two weeks!!!
This is one of the best public radio stations out there and Phil Schapp is one of the most knowledgeable hosts.

Bauza live in the studio? I'd be surprised, I think he died in the 90s sometime...
There's that great anecdote about him from the CuBop compilation called "The Original Mambo Kings" that includes Bird and Machito doing the Afro-Cuban Suite that was arranged and recorded by Bauza in the mid-50s. He put his phone number on the tapebox with a note to call him if there were any problems. When Phil Schaap was producing the reissue in the early 90s, he called the number and Mario answered the phone!
Anyway, that compilation is a good introduction to Bauza (a giant of afro-cuban music) and there are some latter day sessions that he did in the 90s that are worth digging up if they're still in print. I think the title of one of them was the address in Brooklyn where he lived for fifty years ... N

Hmmm . . . that might also explain why Schapp said they were going all day and then the show ended around noon. Obviously a repeat broadcast.
It's like when they repeat video of new events and it says LIVE on the screen, even if it's the Kennedy assassination . . . messes with my head, man.
Mario Bauza died Jul 11, 1993 in New York.

That's a great compilation, Nou. Actually I think you're referring to the suite Chico O'Farril arranged (for Machito with Dizzy - Bird was on some other Machito cuts) but Bauza' (should be an accent on the "a") was Machito's musical director.

"944 Columbus". The other great Messidor CD's from the 90's are "Tanga" and "My Time is Now". Bauza' doesn't play on the CD's by then - he was 'spiritual' leader, but all three are cream-of-the-crop NY Afro-Cuban BIG Band. I've been trying to get John K. to pick up some of the arrangements for Goma Dura (hint, Johnny, hint)...
