The subject of jazz on the radio, or the lack thereof, has come up a few times. In fact there’s a lot of great jazz programming available and this new forum category should make it easier to find shows of interest. Announcements, playlists, etc., are welcome here, as are comments or discussions on shows, or any topic relating to music on radio and TV.

Also check the Radio page (http://vancouverjazz.com/directory/radio.php) for regular programming schedules. At the bottom of that page you’ll find links to publicradiofan.com (http://www.publicradiofan.com/) which simplifies finding jazz programs on the Internet.

I have written briefly about this before and in a way its kind of pointless to belabour the point because it will never happnen but the lack of a full time radio station dedicated to jazz and blues is a major reason why the live music scene doesn't thrive here. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that just because Chicago, LA, Seatte, New York etc. have radio stations that play jazz that its any easier to survive but it helps a helluva lot. Although there are several shows dedicated to jazz, there is no consistency. For example, where can you go to listen to a show that say is featuring a bunch of the 'new' releases.

How great would it be to know that everyday from 6:00 am to 9:00 you could listen to the driveby shift, then from 11:00 to 3:00, afternoon jazz, then 4:00 to 7:00 is another driveby and then late night jazz from 7:00 on. Okay well thats an all jazz day but you could put in other genres like blues, world, latin etc. but at least there would be some major consistency.

At the very least it would let a lot more people know whats going on in the city and make them aware.

My two cents worth.
